10.10.2001 The Armed Services: Who is Fighting for us? Listen Listen

The Forums: Are you confident our armed forces are ready for battle?
View the "Most Wanted" terrorists.

Their recruitment ads encouraged young men and women to "be all they can be;" to "get an edge on life." The armed forces, it seemed, was a high tech community college that young adults could use to springboard them to successful careers in the computer industry.

But since last month's terrorist attacks, members of the armed services are being called to prepare for combat -- not a high-paying job. Who makes up our troops? And are they ready for battle?

Guest:

  •  Kevin Riedler, fellow in the National Security Fellowship Program at The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
  • Laura Miller, military sociologist at UCLA

The Tribal World of Afghanistan Listen Listen

Afghanistan is less a country and more an arbitrarily combined group of tribes. The Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks reside within the same nation only because foreign powers drew the international borders based on their own interests.

Any long-term solution to instability in Afghanistan must take into account the tribal nature of the nation. This hour, we explore the four major tribes that make up Afghanistan and examine the long-term prospects for peace in the region.

    Guests:

  • Qayum Karzai, founder of Afghans for a Civil Society; his brother is the leader of the Taliban opposition group in the South
  • Peter Tomson, former Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1989-1992
  • David Morgan, Professor of History and Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin
