The Tribal World of Afghanistan
Listen
Afghanistan is less a country and more an arbitrarily combined group
of tribes. The Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks reside within the
same nation only because foreign powers drew the international borders
based on their own interests.
Any long-term solution to instability in Afghanistan must take into account
the tribal nature of the nation. This hour, we explore the four major
tribes that make up Afghanistan and examine the long-term prospects for
peace in the region.
Guests:
Qayum Karzai, founder of Afghans for a Civil Society; his brother
is the leader of the Taliban opposition group in the South
Peter Tomson, former Ambassador to Afghanistan from 1989-1992
David Morgan, Professor of History and Religious Studies at the
University of Wisconsin
